Talon Yearbook

My yearbook advisor, Ms. Bean, took a chance on me by recruiting me to the staff early. By senior year, I was on my second term as editor-in-chief and in love with yearbook. Come 2020 though, the COVID-19 pandemic set forth a plethora of challenges that ultimately led to my undertaking of nearly the whole book. Despite the challenge, I’m monumentally proud of the final product and the skills I was able to take away from the experience.

 More About the Book

  • For a bulk of the yearbook’s layout, Adobe InDesign was used. When combining InDesign with Balfour’s (the book’s publisher) proprietary publishing software, it worked out quite well and increased my knowledge of the industry-leading software.

In addition to InDesign, Adobe Photoshop was also used for photo editing and image manipulation.

  • While I was not technically trained in journalistic writing at the time of publishing, “Talon” knows not of AP Style or other technicalities of journalistic writing. However, despite these qualms, I’m still unequivocally proud of the yearbook, its storytelling, and all it stands for in my ultimate journey towards a professional in the communication field.

  • Running a school yearbook is essentially like running a small business — there are sales to be made, sponsorships to secure, and a staff to manage. There is a significant amount of work associated with each aspect as well.

Of course, I’m extremely proud of the yearbook’s design and beauty - but I’m equally grateful for the transferable leadership and business skills that my time as editor-in-chief provided.
